A brief recap of last years Block Party and a discussion of what went well and what changes might take place

·        ice cream lost money but it was agreed that it could be done better and along with pop are fun for the guests.

The contractors list was passed around for members to check and members were asked to make any additions as they feel are warranted

Karen brought up zoning issues

-         Addition to St. Pat’s was passed through the City Planning committee

-         The  white home on 3rd and Vine was Ok’ed for a professional office

permit (2 years or permanent was not known)

Councilman Scot O’Malley gave an update on goings on at city council

-         We discussed the increasing number of nuisance homes, (late parties, noise, possible drug usage, etc.) and what we as residence can do about them. The root problems is getting the landlords to clean up their property and monitor it properly.

-         One of the ways to do this is to report all nuisance instances to the police so they have a record of every call at that address.

-         One of the things that Scot has found out is that the landlord’s can assessed for every police call made to a residence. The nuisance ordinance might be one of the strongest ways we have to force the landlords to clean up and control there property better.

-         We also discussed what can be done about the junk cars, appliances etc.  Scot filled us in on the city ordinances relating to these issues. In general if appliances, piles of trash, cars, especially unlicensed cars, are left for over 2 weeks, if you ask the city can address the issue with the owner and have it cleaned up.

-         Comment(One of the things we noticed during our discussion is that we as neighbors try to be nice to a fault. We need to address more issues before they get out of hand)

-         We also discussed how to control speed within the city. The city council has been looking at many solutions, one of them that Scot mentioned was adding a new style of speed bump in strategic areas. Speed in the city is a serious issue with many children at risk.

-         Scot then asked the opinion of those assembled on the issue of fireworks in the city. The consensus was that both the sale and display of fire works should be limited to the 4th of July and/or the day that the city shoots off their fireworks, and New Years Eve.

New Business centered on the upcoming, Second Annual, HVNA Block Party, Saturday, September 15th.

-         The Brat Stand brought in $436

-         The Garage Sale brought in approximately $150

-         This years Block Party would be done in conjunction with the 25th

-         Anniversary celebration of the Vine Street florist shop

Several new ideas were put forward:

-         family or children picture taken by Vine Str. Floral with an autumn setting

-         Polaroid's could be free and they could be made into cards for a small fee

-         -kids parade down 6th street with bicycles etc.

-         -we are looking for more ideas for crafts for varying ages of kids

-         -ice cream was discussed

-         Should we have Chuck get ice cream again;

-         should we ask the gentleman with the ice cream cart to bring his cart to the party;

-         should we ask Knokes’ to supply ice cream answer to be considered

-         We decided to talk with Knoke's first

We also discussed that at the block party our goal is provide a fun afternoon at little or no cost to those attending so things like Ice Cream would be sold at or below cost or free if we can. All of the kids activities, crafts, face painting, the band and anything else possible should be free.
