HVNA Meeting Minutes

January 22, 2002

Present:  Geri Tresselt and Chuck Kummeth, Sam Nooger, Lee & Laurie Wyland, Cheri Rosenberger,  Matt Romberg, Jon and Amy Hester, Scot O’Malley

The meeting began at 7:00 with some social time where wine, ice tea, crackers, cheese and cookies were served. At 7:30 we started discussing the agenda items.

Much of the social time was dedicated to neighborhood issues and a new ordinance that Scot is working on with city council.

Treasurers Report:  Current balance of $292.21.

Meeting minutes were reviewed and accepted as accurate. We pulled a few items from the minuets to discuss at this meeting.

Old Business:

Fundraisers for the block party. At the last meeting it was decided to have two brat stand weekends instead of one.  Chuck and Jon have volunteered to work together to nail down the two weekends with City Market. We gave them 4 weekends to choose from July 12-14 or the next weekend, July 19-21st and August 16-18th or the next weekend August 23-25th.

Scot discussed a new public nuisance landlord ordinance that he is introducing at city council. The new ordinance is targeted at neglectful landlords that do not take care of the property or monitor what happens at the property. The intention of the ordinance is to make landlords responsible for the property and what happens on the property. The new ordinance will come before city council on February 18th. He would like a good representation of people to support the new ordinance.

If you have comments of concerns about the ordinance, please contact Scot before February 18th then please make it a point to attend the meeting if at all possible.

Geri brought pictures from the block party. After passing them around for review Lee took them to see if some will work on our web page. After he is done they will be turned over to our Historian, Matt.

New Business:

The HVNA is sponsoring a balloon for the Hot Air Affair.

There was some discussion about the HVNA sponsoring the balloon for the Hot Air Affair. Everyone liked that is was happening. There was support for next year contacting more people in the HVNA. There were others who would be interested in join in the sponsorship next year.  Also, Geri agreed to be the 6th Tutu Dancer.

For the Hot air affair as well as other activities it was proposed that we purchase a 3’x4’ banner with the logo of the HVNA on it.  The cost is $125.00.

We had a motion and a second to purchase the Banner. The vote was unanimous that Wayne should pursue getting the banner made. Chuck will cut a check when Wayne needs it.

Next years HVNA calendar: Cheri mentioned an idea to improve sales. Have the calendars ready before the chamber starts selling tickets for the home tour.

To do this though she needs our help. She needs people to volunteer their homes for next years calendar. We have used some of the same homes two years in a row and we would like to have all new homes next year. Please contact Cheri if you are interested in having your home on the calendar.

We started the discussion on when the Old Town Social (previously known as block party) should be held this year.  The last two years it has been the middle of September around the 15th.  This has been the same weekend as “Spirit in the Park”. This year the date would be the 14th.

A couple of ideas were raised if we feel it is a problem.

1)      Have our social the week before

2)      Have our social closer to the park on 1st or 2nd street.

There should be more discussion next meeting to determine if this is a big enough issue or if we should choose the 14th in any case.

There was a brief discussion about having a booth at the Music and Art Festival this year to promote the HVNA. No decision was made. No one knew vary much about it. This should be discussed again at the next meeting.

We discussed briefly a banner across 2nd St. The cost should be researched but the consensus at the meeting was that the cost may prohibit us from doing this again this year.  This should be assigned to someone at the next meeting to research the cost to have it made.

For next meeting, Wayne will talk to Dorothy at the Historical Society to determine if she would speak about the archives and how they can be used. (Follow-on from the last meeting)

Lee talked about the tour for the Eau Clair Preservation Foundation. They will be coming on Sunday February 10th.   They will be visiting the Octagon House, the 1st Baptist Church, having lunch at the German Restaurant, touring the homes of Lee and Laurie Wyland as well as Chuck and Becky Kummeth then wrapping up the day with a bus tour of Hudson.

From about 3:00-4:00 there will an open presentation at the Church of the history of the First Baptist Church and its ties to Hudson’s historical past and the Octagon house as well as a demonstration of the historic church organ. If you are interested, the Presentation and Demonstration at the church is open to the HVNA and any friends of the HVNA.

For the next meeting, Lee will review the old minutes from last year and compile a list of ideas that we have discussed and dropped to see if any are viable this year.

Geri will again head up the walking tour in May. Cheri and Geri are going to work together to come up with ideas that will make this walking tour more interesting and draw more people that the last two years.

Some of the ideas that were discussed included a “Tea and stroll” were tea would be served in the gardens of the Octagon house followed by a walking tour.  Another idea was to start at the Octagon house like we have but have one or two homes along the way where people were able to stop in and have tea, cookies etc… Geri and Cheri will come back at the next meeting with some ideas. If you have any ideas please pass them along to Geri or Cheri before the next meeting.
